Digital Gardener

Digital Gardener

Digital Gardener is a generatively designed artwork that translates autonomous computational growth into a physical composition of transparent layers, glass, paper and metal. Three laser-printed transparent foils are layered between four sheets of glass, creating visual depth through overlapping graphics, changing light and the shadows produced by the physical construction.

Each shape is generated by autonomously acting constructs equipped with a ruleset and evolves through different generations over time. The top and bottom layers are based on the same population at different stages, making it possible to look through the physical depth of the artwork and recognize its development. The hand-signed paper base introduces a traditional material contrast to the glass, metal and computational process.
