Rule 30: Cellular Computation In Blue And Yellow

Rule 30: Cellular Computation In Blue And Yellow is a generative digital artwork exploring how simple computational rules can produce complex visual structures. Real-world biological, chemical and physical systems form the conceptual foundation for asking how complexity emerges across scales ranging from galaxies to cells, atoms and strings.

The artwork uses the cellular automata mechanism discovered by Stephen Wolfram in the 1980s to explore how simple rules found throughout nature can produce both complexity and distinctive aesthetics. From snowflakes to patterns on sea snail shells, these processes can be represented mathematically and visualized through iterative computation.
